A Survey Faux Pas: Absolute Question

In the last couple of weeks, I’ve gone over examples of frequent survey question mistakes.

Having covered both the loaded and double-barreled questions, let’s take a look at what is known as the absolute question.

Here’s an example:

Do you ever drink coffee in the morning?

  • Yes
  • No

Although the respondent may drink coffee in the morning a few times a week, the person might be inclined to answer with a no.

Instead, you can do two things: rephrase the question and add some frequency options to it.

Here’s an alternative to the question above:

How often do you drink coffee in the morning?

  • Once a week
  • 2-4 times a week
  • 5-6 times a week
  • Daily
  • Never

Not only do these options add flexibility, but you’ll be able to collect better survey responses and data.
