Just Give Me All The Avocados You Have

Hey everyone,

Just like Ron Swanson loves bacon and eggs, I feel the same way when it comes to avocados. Continuing with last week’s post, let’s dive deeper on how the Hass avocado is doing in several markets this year.

Each chart contains 3 data points: units sold in lbs, sales in US$ and the average price of an avocado. The data is presented in 4 week periods and these U.S. metropolitan areas are ordered by GDP.

1. New York ($1.8 trillion)

2. Los Angeles ($1 trillion)

3. Chicago ($689 billion)

4. San Francisco ($549 billion)

5. Washington DC ($541 billion)

6. Dallas/Ft. Worth ($513 billion)

7. Houston ($479 billion)

8. Boston ($464 billion)

9. Philadelphia ($444 billion)

10. Atlanta ($397 billion)

11. Seattle ($392 billion)

12. Miami/Ft. Lauderdale ($355 billion)

Both Los Angeles and New York love avocados!

Over 55 million pounds of avocados have been sold in LA in 2020 and the average price for an avocado ($1.16) is among the lowest of these 12 cities. Whereas, NYC has the second highest average price ($1.46) and close to 35 million pounds have been sold in the Big Apple!

That’s it for now! Next week we will look at production numbers.

Have a wonderful weekend!
