Do you want to know what’s underrated? Making your users feel comfortable during 1:1 interviews.
As an interviewee, I’ve participated in rigid and structured interviews where things feel awkward. As an interviewer, I aim for a pleasant and rewarding conversation with users.
You can take several steps to make your interviewees feel at home:
- Call them before the interview to explain its purpose.
- Greet them by their first name at all times.
- Before you get started, break the ice with small talk.
- Smile and make eye contact.
- While they are speaking, avoid any interruptions.
- Be attentive and authentic to their responses.
Very important, come prepared. Write an interview script with the necessary questions and allow some space for the impromptu ones.
