Survey Design Tidbit #5: Balanced Scales

In order to reduce bias, your answer choices must be balanced.

Let’s look at the following question:

How satisfied are you with our self-checkout kiosks?

  • Very Satisfied
  • Satisfied
  • Neutral

What’s wrong with this scale? Respondents are encouraged to provide positive feedback only.

Here’s how the scale should look like:

How satisfied are you with our self-checkout kiosks?

  • Very Satisfied
  • Somewhat Satisfied
  • Neither Satisfied Nor Dissatisfied
  • Somewhat Dissatisfied
  • Very Dissatisfied

As you can see there’s a balance between the positive and negative answer choices.

Whenever you are writing survey questions, remember to be as objective as possible because it’ll help you get reliable and honest feedback!
