Survey Incentives: Yea or Nay?

When you send out a survey, do you offer incentives to respondents?

Although it may boost your survey’s response rate, it’s not always necessary to motivate your audience with gifts.

Let’s say that you work at an email marketing startup and you recently rolled out a new feature for your customers. You decide to run an NPS survey because you want to gauge their satisfaction.

In this case, I would strongly suggest to stay clear from incentives and I’ll tell you why: you run the risk of compromising customer feedback; instead, let them be spontaneous about it.

So when should you provide incentives? When your target audience is very specific or their line of work is quite demanding. Also, for completing an elaborate survey or for participating in a focus group which both can be time-consuming.

What type of incentives can you offer? It can be a physical gift, joining a beta program or a monetary reward (gift cards, coupons, cash, etc.).

So tell me, how do you feel about survey incentives?
